The DWG file extension is the native format for several CAD packages including AutoCAD, Intellicad (and its variants), and PowerCAD. File extension DWG is supported non-natively by several hundred other software applications. DWG (denoted by the . dwg filename extension) has become the de facto standard for CAD drawing interoperability around the world in its industry.

AutoCAD were essentially responsible for popularizing the file format and making it widely available. In fact it has been estimated that there are in excess of two to four billion DWG files in existence. DWG files are directly related to the .DXF format, which is an ASCII version of DWG but DXF is more compatible with other programs since it is ASCII (text) based.

There are several claims as to who should have control over the DWG format. It is Autodesk who designs, defines, and iterates the DWG format as the native format for their CAD applications. Autodesk sells a read/write library, called RealDWG, under selective licensing terms for use in non-competitive applications. Several other companies have attempted to reverse engineer Autodesk's DWG format, and offer software libraries to read and write Autodesk DWG files. The most successful of them is Open Design Alliance, a non-profit consortium of software developers. They managed to release a read/write/view library called the OpenDWG Toolkit.

Up till this day there are no open-source DWG libraries available, and neither RealDWG (owned by AutoCAD) nor DWGdirect (created by ODA) are licensed on terms that are compatible with the GNU General Public License, or any similar free software license. However it is free to publicly download and use DWGdirect.

File extension DWG can be viewed on Windows using the free DWG TrueView program. For more info about such data formats, can visit this blog post too.
